Fertilizer and NPK, what the heck is it?
Are you scratching your head when it comes to fertilizing your houseplants? We see your eyes glaze over…so here you have it…
Nitrogen = Growth
Phosphorus = Roots & Buds
Potassium = Water Uptake
NPK is the standardized labeling of fertilizers to indicate their content of nutrients. The N-P-K label you see on packages lists the amounts of 3 chemical elements necessary for healthy plants; Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. These 3 elements are listed in numbers as in 4-3-6 by ratio weight in the fertilizer. See the quick breakdown of elements below. All elements are equally needed but it's important to know which numbers should be higher considering what plant your fertilizing. When your able to pop in the shop ask questions and we’ll show your our favorite finds which are both ethically sourced, small batched or crafted right here in Portland, OR!
Nitrogen is what your plant uses to grow healthy green foliage. Perfect for house plants that we don't necessarily want to flower.
Phosphorus promotes root health and helps your plant make flowers and fruit. Great for anthurium, Christmas cactus and other flowering plants.
Potassium helps your plant regulate its water use, synthesizing proteins and catalyzing enzymes. Great for all plants!
If any of this is confusing or simply off putting please come into the shop, pick our brain and we'll help you make your dream indoor jungle.
